It's Here!

October 10, 2012

It’s going to be nice to travel as a family again.

Window Whimsy

October 9, 2012

I’m trying to pay a lot more attention to details in my home these days.

It’s the little things that my children and husband will remember when they are away, and the little things that make me smile when I think of home.

I started telling Courtney I wanted to hang Christmas lights in my bedroom about a year ago and last week, I finally did it!

This second picture is with the lights out. It’s not nearly this bright in my actual room. It just adds a nice glow ….it’s whimsical, soft, and romantic.

Home Management…3/26 Update

March 26, 2012

I’m *so* very behind on my book reviews.

I probably should have stuck Large Family Logistics on the bottom of my list for this year. I knew when I picked the book up, I would be there for a while. 🙂

I’ve already read through the book once, but I decided it was worth reading through again and this time with the intention of trying out some of her ideas for home management.

Since it’s Monday morning, I don’t have time to write a full review, but I thought it would be fun to share this week’s assignment and progress!

According to the book, this is “living room/family room” week. This means these areas will have a deep cleaning this week as well, on Saturday, the assignment is to look at the room and decide on something that would help the room look nicer or more “homey”. In addition, there is a bedroom assignment this week. We’ll be cleaning ceiling fans, cobwebs, and light switches. Of course, one day is also devoted to laundry and a general scrub-down of the house.

I have found I look forward to having these Saturday projects. It gives me extra motivation to tidy everything so we can tackle some project that’s needed to be done.

This past Saturday, we bought a dishwasher from Craig’s List.

Josh and Courtney took Matthew to pick it up. Later that day, Jacob installed it, and then installed these two light fixtures in the family room!

If you’ve visited my home, you know these look WAY better than the hanging light and the broken ceiling fan that were here when we moved in!

I framed a picture for my bedroom from a recent trip with Paul, and hung a wreath I made from some of the roses that Paul gave me for our 17th anniversary (yes, shamefully, I’ve had them just hanging waiting to make my wreath for that long….).

I also added grapevine to my bedroom curtain rod (I need a different rod for this, but I’m not ready for that just yet!). I made it from a thrift store grapevine wreath.

Since last week was bedroom week, we’ve done little things to all the bedrooms…including patching the terribly out-dated room our littles sleep in- we’re preparing it for paint.

This week, I have goals for hanging our baby pictures in the living room (I have to find enough frames first!), and maybe finishing the trim around the floor of that room.

The family room needs lots of work, I’m praying about where the Lord would have me work in that room this week. The windows need to be cleaned from the outside and we have a window unit (air conditioner) that needs to be mounted before summer. Aside from that, I’m not sure!

This entire home management system has given us a much more efficient system for working in our home.

I’m going to try to post a full review in upcoming days, but until then, if you have considered this book, it’s quickly becoming a favorite in my home!

Goals Check- January 2012

February 6, 2012

This has been a crazy month. It seems that every time I set goals, the door opens wide for distractions and delays of all kinds. Such is life.

In any case, the bad news. I’m terribly behind on my sewing projects. I know, I know, I’m hanging my head low. I did work on a few things, but nothing is completely finished. I really need to step it up….I have a ton of projects needing my attention. Perhaps February will allow me a little more time for these projects.

My savings for our deep freeze is coming right along. We’re about 1/4 of the way towards our goal. Now to just find the freezer. The largest in hardware stores I can find, at the moment, is 16 cubic feet. This will barely accomplish our goals for the freezer. I’m hoping SEARS might have a better selection, maybe this one(?):

By mid-February, we’ll have also saved enough to replace our 21 year old mattress. Ahhhh….sleep…… I’m so excited. The last time we had saved this money, I ended up having to have some dental work done that swallowed our entire mattress budget.

These are the times it would be so easy to go out and charge what we want. It’s hard to resist the urge to have things we want NOW, but boy, that option really stings in the end. Paul and I have worked so hard to pay off our debts– I NEVER want to go there again. Period.

My reading list is my shining star. Not only did I finish my January goals, I’m also on target for finishing a read through my entire Bible this year, and I finished 2 additional books! If you would like to read my reviews on these books, you can look for my Good Reads widget in the lower right corner.

Thank you again, Crystal, for the inspiration to set these goals! It seems that we don’t get nearly as much done when we don’t have a plan!
