Pinterest- Homemade Personal Products

November 29, 2012

I think most of us have some concerns about the chemicals we use in daily personal care.

I’ve been reading up on a few of the most commonly used hygiene products and the list of chemicals will make you a little sick to your stomach!

When I came across this recipe for toothpaste, and this recipe for deodorant, I couldn’t resist trying them….I had everything I needed on hand and they seemed rather easy.

Courtney actually ended up mixing both for me.

First, the toothpaste.

I didn’t have mint or stevia to add. Surprisingly, it wasn’t so bad and my teeth felt amazingly clean after I brushed!

Two weeks now since I first started using it and I’m still happy! From what I’ve read, coconut oil is very good for your health….and I can tell my teeth are whiter even after a couple of weeks. I’m VERY happy with the results!

Coconut Oil Toothpaste

  • 3 Tbsp coconut oil
  • 3 Tbsp baking soda
  • 25 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 1 packet stevia

Place the coconut oil and baking soda in a bowl and mix until blended. Add the peppermint essential oil, and stevia. Continue to mix until you’ve reached a toothpaste consistency.

I placed mine in a small tupperware container in the bathroom cabinet.

Second, the deodorant was a big surprise!

Natural Deodorant

  • 2-3 Tbsp Coconut Oil
  • 1/8 Cup Baking Soda
  • 1/8 Cup Cornstarch
  • (I also added a few drops of lavender oil)

Mix the dry ingredients until well blended. Microwave coconut oil until liquified and add to dry ingredients. Mix well and spoon into a small container. Again, I added mine to a small tupperware container. Once it cooled and hardened, I was able to use it as a stick. Nice!

Oddly, nothing in this would have made me expect it to work. It will not stop perspiration. That said, I’ve also used it for a couple of weeks and have no odor issues. None. Why have I been paying $3 per stick of deodorant all these years? The worst thing I can say is that when you apply the stick, it can flake off a bit.

Do you make your own personal products?? Care to share a recipe??

Still Alive

November 13, 2012

Well, so much for that idea!

My day took a quick turn after I posted my first blog. Big surprise.

I managed a shower and to have my teeth brushed! I even brushed through my hair…aren’t you proud?

We drank cocoa and giggled through the morning.

In an effort to have a head start on our Sunday fellowship at church, the children all helped mix up cornbread, which I burned. Such is life.

I stepped away for just a minute to take care of something else and that was all it needed.

I decided the importance was actually in the mixing anyway…with everyone standing around and us doing it together.

I spent the afternoon reflecting on my life with only littles. It doesn’t seem like that many years ago.

I did find time to clean the bathroom. I remembered the days of cleaning in steps. Each time I would use the restroom, I would clean one part until the entire room was clean. It was a discipline that I still use.

No, I didn’t have the immediate satisfaction of a perfectly cleaned room in half an hour, but I didn’t have the half hour to spend without the children, either.

It all worked out.

The house was never picture perfect (nor is it now….), but it was Ok.

Anyway, I just wanted to post and let you know that I did make it…in case you were wondering if Saturday just did me in entirely. 🙂

It’s been a long, wonderful week for our family.

We’ve been surrounded by folks we adore. That’s the best way to spend the week.

Today, we’re packing up supplies and going to teach a local 4H group an introduction to quilting. I’m excited! This meeting is held at a church we used to attend. Perhaps the Lord will allow us to see some old friends while we’re there.

This morning, while I’ve been dressing, Emma’s kept me company.

Her doll, Molly, woke up with frizzy hair this morning and she’s not happy.

Molly is known for not having the easiest hair for Emma to keep.

Saturday night, I spent more than an hour trimming split ends and combing through her mangled locks. I decided to try a bit of coconut oil (I know this is sounding ridiculous) to comb through some of the knots.

I braided her hair into two cute pigtails and tied little bows at the end.

Then Emma decided it was time for a new hair style. I think I see another night of brushing in my future.

This morning, Emma is having a hard time getting her to sit up for her hair to be styled. She’s not been a happy girl.

Seven year old problems.
