Book Review- The Hair Raising Joys of Raising Boys

February 5, 2012

The Hair-Raising Joys of Raising BoysThe Hair-Raising Joys of Raising Boys by Dave Meurer

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I purchased this book last year on a clearance sale. I don’t have a whole lot to say (it was a short book!).

Honestly, I figured it wouldn’t contain anything too deep.

I did enjoy some of the stories…they were funny. If you are looking for parenting advice, this is a book you should probably avoid.

I have sons. I found myself a little annoyed that the author continued to compare himself to his young sons. I appreciate the desire to want to have fun, but doesn’t the world have enough grown men who still act like little boys? We need more MEN.

My other issue with this book was what seemed to be the use of manipulation and bribery as a parenting skill.

If you are looking for something of substance to read, I would pass this book on the shelf.

I did give it two stars….if you are looking for something “lighthearted” where parenting is concerned, you might enjoy this book.

Book Review- Bold Love

January 24, 2012

If you can’t tell, I’m REALLY enjoying Good Reads!

Thank you, Courtney, for the suggestion! It’s helping me stay on top of my book goals for this year.

So, here goes:

Bold LoveBold Love by Dan B. Allender

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When I first started Bold Love, I had a very difficult time following the writer…I think I got lost in his writing.

I’m so glad I didn’t stop. This book caused me to examine true love in light of God’s love for us, and specifically, forgiveness. I personally, most enjoyed the sections on how to love different types of people, especially those who hurt you.

I will most definitely read this book again in the future.

*On a personal note, I have often struggled with what it means to genuinely love someone…. what does that look like?
Is it love to continue to encourage someone who is living in sin?
What about those who have hurt you?
How do you forgive what feels to be the most unforgivable of hurts?

As usual, I don’t necessarily agree with everything the writer shares, but this book is full of great information and insight for Christians.

Thank you, Shepherd Family, for loaning it to me! I would say this is a book I’ll be thinking through for some time and plan to read again in the future.

January 2012 Reading List- Book Review

The Little Boy Down the Road: Short Stories and Essays on the Beauty of Family LifeThe Little Boy Down the Road: Short Stories and Essays on the Beauty of Family Life by Douglas W. Phillips

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Having already planned my 2012 reading list, when a friend suggested that I read this book, I almost tucked it away for next year. I’m so glad that I didn’t!

This is one of the sweetest books that I’ve read on family life.

There is nothing “deep” here, just sweet stories, honest thoughts, and encouragement for families.

I loved this book! It may well be placed on a list of my “all time favorites”!
